This course covers current and emerging spine topics driving national change in the quality and delivery of care. Participants from all training backgrounds will learn new skills to survive in the spine care environment of the near future. A unique split curriculum delivers Mayo-quality updates via didactics, case presentations, a hands-on examination skills lab, a US-guided injection skill lab and a surgical skills lab. Overall, the course provides a rewarding clinical experience for all spine care practitioners, including surgeons, medical specialists, primary care providers and family medicine providers, as well as physical therapists, clinical nurse practitioners and PA’s.

Target Audience

This multidisciplinary course is meant for both non-operative and procedural specialists and mid-level providers in various specialties including orthopedics, neurosurgery, family medicine, internal medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, anesthesia, as well as physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and physical therapists.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  1. Perform a complete musculoskeletal and neurological examination of a patient who presents with low back pain with or without leg symptoms.
  2. Perform a complete musculoskeletal and neurological examination of a patient who presents with neck pain with or without arm symptoms.
  3. Describe an evidence based approach to acute neck pain, including initial pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment, and follow up treatment when symptoms persist.
  4. Describe an evidence based approach to cervical radiculopathy including pharmacologic,  nonpharmacologic and surgical treatment options.
  5. Respond to complications of spine surgery .
  6. Recognize the importance of osteoporosis care and impact on surgical and non-surgical patient outcomes
  7. Debate the advantages of cervical disc arthroplasty versus ACDF
  8. Demonstrate and facilitate the surgical treatment and management on patients with central cord syndrome
  9. Describe and organize the surgical treatment and management of cervical deformity
  10. Assess and prioritize the operative and non-operative treatment of spine trauma
  11. Summarize the impact of spine disease on global health
  12. Review, describe and minimize common and rare complications associated with spine surgery
  13. Understand and delineate the issues surrounding cervical spine adjacent segment disease
