Pre-concert Talk | The History of the Cello Sonata

British composer, journalist and lecturer Robert Hugill returns to Conway Hall for a free pre-concert talk exploring the history of the cello sonata.

Growing out of the continuo sonata, the history of the cello sonata is one of the liberation of the cello. In early sonatas it doubled the keyboard, and we look at how the sonata moved towards the romantic, dramatic music of Brahms and Shostakovich.

This free event will be followed by the evening’s Sunday Concert, featuring Lydia Shelly and Nicolas Stavy in a programme of cello sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms and Schostakovich.

This event is in the Brockway Room on the ground floor. For accessibility info: https://conwayhall.org.uk/about/visiting-us/
