April 2 - 4, 2020 - Mayo Clinic - Phoenix, Arizona

This conference will provide state-of-the-art instruction on comprehensive evaluation and management of challenging laryngeal-related disorders and corresponding rehabilitation techniques. The meeting offers a multi-disciplinary approach on a wide variety of voice and swallowing topics, surgical procedures and techniques for post-surgical swallow rehabilitation, and post laryngectomy voice restoration. ASHA credit is available for our SLP attendees (please see requirements listed at the bottom of this page).

Course format will include evidence-based lectures, multidisciplinary panel discussions with case presentations, live demonstrations and interactive Q & A with Mayo and guest faculty. Attendees are invited to submit cases or questions for the "Ask the Expert Panel". Target Audience

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Identify and treat functional disorders of the larynx that account for frequently misdiagnosed etiologies of voice and swallowing disorders.
  • Manage Head and Neck Cancer-related swallowing disorders that can be immediately implemented into practice.
  • Explain various pediatric voice disorders and treatment options.
  • Identify the differences in diagnostic characteristics among muscle tension dysphonia, vocal tremor, and spasmodic dysphonia, for optimal treatment.
  • Describe variables in treatment of muscle tension dysphonia in singers.

(Workshop)

Following attendance at this workshop, participants should be able to:

TEP Management Workshop:

  • Assess voice prostheses in a laryngectomee and evaluate methods for sizing and techniques for placement.
  • Determine the proper heat and moisture exchange system for laryngectomees and instruct the patient on placement and management.

Affordable Choices for Voices and What Therapy Tools Work for What?

  • Perform low-cost, yet comprehensive, acoustic and aerodynamic voice assessment.

Office-Based Laryngology Procedures:

  • Evaluate optimal techniques for performing a variety of office-based procedures.
  • Identify methods and tools used to perform office-based procedures.
  • Assess when to use of an office-based procedure vs. surgery.

Completion Requirements

Learners must complete both the course and faculty evaluations at the end of the course in order to receive a certificate of completion.

Guest Faculty

Sharon H. Gnagi, M.D. is an ear, nose, and throat surgeon in Phoenix Children's Division of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Gnagi graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in cell and molecular biology and a minor in chemistry. She then earned her Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch. She completed an otolaryngology - head and neck surgery residency at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Following residency, Dr. Gnagi completed a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Gnagi treats all aspects of pediatric ENT, with a special interest in head and neck tumors, congenital neck masses, and the surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. She has advanced training in management of cleft lip and palate and enjoys helping children better communicate by treating speech disorders. She serves as a member of the aerodigestive team at Phoenix Children's, treating children with dysphagia, aspiration, airway anomalies, and children in need of airway reconstruction.

Kristie Knickerbocker, M.S., CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and singing voice specialist in Fort Worth, Texas. She rehabilitates voice and swallowing at her private practice, a tempo Voice Center, and lectures on voice science nationally. She is part of the Professional Development Committee for ASHA Special Interest Group 3, Voice and Upper Airway Disorders, and a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the Pan-American Vocology Association.

C. Blake Simpson, M.D. co-authored the only surgical atlas for laryngology, Operative Techniques in Laryngology, which was published in 2008.  It has over 100,000 chapter downloads and has been translated into Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.  He served as the Director of the Voice Center at UT Health San Antonio for 23 years and recently joined the faculty at University of Alabama, Birmingham as the Division Director of Larynology and Co-Director of the UAB Voice Center.

Mayo Clinic Faculty

Sara Charney, M.S., CCC-SLP completed her Masters of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville with an emphasis in voice and medical speech pathology.  She completed an internship at UT Southwestern’s Clinical Center for Voice Care where she gained further experience with the treatment and assessment of singers and other professional voice users with voice disorders, tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP) management, and complex swallowing disorders.  Her interests include the professional voice, voice and swallowing disorders secondary to head and neck cancer, and paradoxical vocal fold motion. Sara completed her clinical fellowship at the NW Clinic for Voice and Swallowing at Oregon Health & Science University and recently joined the speech-language pathology team at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.

Heather Clark, Ph.D. is a Chair of Speech Pathology in the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She is board-certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. She serves as co-investigator in several projects examining the nature of speech, language, and swallowing impairment in degenerative neurologic disease.  Dr. Clark has served as a topic chair for the ASHA convention, program chair of the Conference on Motor Speech, and chair of the fall conference of the North Carolina Speech Language Hearing Association.

Lisa R. Crujido, M.S., CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist for the Otolaryngology Department at Mayo Clinic Arizona.  She evaluates and treats dysphagia in patients with head & neck cancer using advanced diagnostics.  Her clinical specialties include the diagnosis and treatment of swallowing and voice disorders in head and neck cancer and the general voice disordered population. She completed her under-graduate and graduate study at Illinois State University.  She completed post-graduate study in the Laryngeal and Speech Section of the NINDS of the National Institutes of Health. She is a co-author on a number of publications that include treatment outcomes using radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, the effects of e-stim and exercise in chronic pharyngeal dysphagia, and treatment programs for total laryngectomies.

Jaime L. Engholdt, P.A.-C., M.S. is an instructor in Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.  She performs TEP changes and troubleshooting in her independent clinic.  She is a physician Assistant for the   Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery/Audiology and a coordinator for the Larynx Transplant Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Mayo Clinic Arizona.

Michael L. Hinni, M.D. is a Professor of Otolaryngology and Chair for the Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery/Audiology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.  His interests include Surgical oncology of the head and neck; Voice disorders and phonosurgery; Microsurgery for head and neck cancer and Thyroid and parathyroid surgery.  He is known for being in the forefront of developing minimally invasive procedures for surgical removal of head and neck tumors.

Christina H. Kang, M.M., M.S., CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Singing Voice Specialist in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She is an instructor of Speech-Pathology in Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Christina lectures domestically and internationally on topics involving voice and swallowing disorders. She conducts research in muscle tension dysphagia, voice and autoimmune diseases, and use of alternative medicine for treatment of muscle tension dysphonia. She received Master of Music degree from the University of Connecticut and Master of Science degree in Communication Science and Disorders from Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. She received training in voice disorders at the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center and completed her clinical fellowship at the University of Kentucky Clinical Voice Center.

William E. Karle, M.D. is a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.  He completed his Bachelor of Science in Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Rochester from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Following graduation he worked as a clinical research coordinator at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Vascular Surgery, obtained his medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and was inducted into the AOA Medical Honor Society. During his time in medical school he spent time volunteering in Uganda and completed a one-year research fellowship for the THANC Foundation. He did his residency in Otolaryngology at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, then completed a fellowship in Laryngology at Oregon Health Sciences University.

David G. Lott, M.D. holds the academic rank of Professor of Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He is a consultant in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and serves as the Chair of the Division of Laryngology at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. His practice includes voice and swallowing restoration, laryngeal cancer, and laryngotracheal reconstruction.  Dr. Lott received his M.D. degree at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed a residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Head and Neck Institute. He received further fellowship training in Laryngeal Surgery and Professional Voice at Harvard Medical School /Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Lott is the Associate Director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine, Arizona Campus. In addition, he is the Director of the Head and Neck Regenerative Medicine Lab at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Stephanie R.C. Zacharias, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is a research scientist at Mayo Clinic Arizona.  She received her Communication Sciences and Disorders PhD in Medical Speech Pathology from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, and her MS in Speech Pathology from the Purdue University Audiology and Speech Sciences Department in West Lafayette, Indiana.  Her area of expertise is pediatric voice.
