 Moving On

An exhibition by Emma Shankland

Private view, 6.30pm, Fri 3 May.  All welcome.  Refreshments served.

In this collection of pieces Shankland explores isolation, both physically and emotionally.  ‘Moving On’ is a question not a given as figures and scenes are often static, seemingly disconnected from the environment or paused in daily routines that are hampered or impossible to achieve. All the while there is tension and buckling in the fabric reinforcing the idea of turmoil and conflict. As voyeurs we watch and wait.
Shankland is a community arts worker and traditional banner painter with Durham Bannermakers.  She studied sculpture and installation at Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Canada and has a Masters in Museum and Gallery Education at Newcastle University, UK. She also apprenticed at Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada in the costume department and worked as a props builder. The constant thread in her work is fabric.
