Mayport’s Buried Treasure: The Cost of Obsession

Presenter Billy Scrantom

May 16 at 6:30 PM

Join Beaches Museum for a special presentation on an effort to recover buried treasure in our area on May 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Who can resist the allure of buried treasure? Come indulge your fantasies by hearing a whopping good story of buried treasure in our backyard.

About 70 years ago, Mayport was the site of a decade-long effort by local resident Fred Dillon to recover buried Spanish treasure. Many other prominent Jacksonvillians joined Dillon in the effort. It is the story of an old document describing the location, following markings on trees, tidal creeks, and a Spanish treasure trove beneath the sands of Mayport. And, it is all true.

Dillon’s grandson, Billy Scrantom, will present the story's facts. This occasion also marks Beaches Museum’s reception of the Fred E. Dillon Collection: all documents relating to the recovery effort.

The talk will take place at the Beaches Museum. This event is free to Beaches Museum members with a suggested $5 donation for non-members.
