May 17, 2024 marks 70 years since the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision from the US Supreme Court, which found that “separate but equal” racial segregation was unconstitutional, setting up the eventual integration of schools and other public spaces. The Rev. J.A. DeLaine, a school principal and activist instrumental in the case Briggs v. Elliott, which was combined with other cases into Brown v. Board, fled South Carolina after his home was attacked and burned. He came to Buffalo, founding the African Methodist Episcopal congregation which bears his name, as well as that of Judge J. Waties Waring, who guided Thurgood Marshall and the NAACP to take these cases to the Supreme Court.

This celebration with the DeLaine Waring congregation and Buffalo community will include historical context, free food, music, and small business vendors, and is free and open to the public. Please join us!
