*Charles is 13 years old and is autistic. His parents took part in one of the rounds of caregiver skills training that we supported in 2023 and our partner Autism Society of Kenya (ASK) has continued to monitor his progress over the past year. When ASK first met the family Charles was very hyperactive and lacked concentration. Now he is much calmer, after dietary intervention and rehabilitation with an occupational therapist. Charles’ mum is really impressed with the progress he has made and when ASK visited recently they were able to witness Charles reading and writing. Charles also had little or no communication before but he can now verbalise and make himself understood. He will now be integrated into mainstream classes at school which will mean much more interaction with his peers. His mother is so grateful to ASK for their continued process and follow ups with the family. We hope that Charles will thrive in mainstream education, while still continuing to get the support he needs from our wonderful partner ASK! * not his real name . . . #disability #DisabilityInclusion #autism #AutismSupport #therapy #kenya #EducationForAll #education #charity #partnership #DisabilityAwareness #AutismAwareness #RafikiThaboFoundation #SpecialEducation #AutismCommunity #InternationalDevelopment #EducationIsPower #HelpingChildren #DisabilityIsNotInability #DisabilityPride #DisabilitySupport #NeverGiveUp #NeverGiveUpOnYourDreams #sustainability #SustainableDevelopment

Empowering young people and their communities in Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda through education.
About us
The Rafiki Thabo Foundation’s purpose is to improve the quality of life and increase the life opportunities for members of our link communities. All our projects are initiated and managed by experienced members of the communities in Africa. The majority of our work is about supporting individuals' education in our focus communities. Through our committees in-country, we provide grants to promising students to enable them to continue their education at secondary, polytechnic and university levels where otherwise they would be unable to afford the fees. This is not child sponsorship – all students supported by Rafiki Thabo have already qualified for their further education by their own merits. We simply provide financial assistance to enable them to access the education they are qualified to have. We also support other requests from our link communities, such as a schools feeding programme in Uganda and the development of a secondary school in Lesotho.

This week is Deaf Awareness Week. We are proud to be supporting eight children and young people in Kenya who have a hearing impairment. One of those is Lucy*, who is featured in this film. The film was made just as she was finishing secondary school and with our support she is now studying catering at vocational college. This bright young lady refuses to let her hearing impairment limit her and we applaud her for that! * not her real name https://lnkd.in/epfBMrat #DeafAwarenessWeek #SignLanguage #DisabilityInclusion #kenya #EducationForAll #education #charity #partnership #DisabilityAwareness #RafikiThabo #SpecialEducation

It is devastating to read of the impact of flooding in Kenya these past few days. This follows a prolonged drought which was particularly acute in Voi, where our Kenya programme is run from. The communities we work with are experiencing, first hand, the devastating effects of climate change – we are seeing it mentioned increasingly in the application forms we receive, for example with farmers losing their livelihoods as a result of the changing climate, families no longer able to grow their own food etc. So far we have heard that several of the families who use Dadashi’s services have been displaced and we are checking in with our committee in Kenya to understand whether our scholars have been affected. Our hearts go out to all affected by these devastating floods. 💚 https://lnkd.in/d4MMTtMf . . #Education #EducationForAll #EducationForAllChildren #EducationMatters #EducationIsPower #SupportingChildren #Empowerment #BetterFuture #ChangeTheWorld #Charity #ReachingGoals #RafikiThaboFoundation #InternationalDevelopment #GoodCause #Kenya #floods #nature #ClimateChange #sustainability

Starting today and continuing into the first two weeks this May 1st – 15th, we are a Charity Of The Month with our partner Scrap Car Comparison! Last time we were their Charity Of The Month they raised nearly £5,000 for us with your support! How life-changing is that? 💚 How many lives will you help us transform this time? Please help us on our Donate-a-Car-Scheme journey – spread the word – scrap your car – and donate what you can! Since 2016 Scrap Car Comparison have raised hundreds of thousands for over 30 charities making a huge impact. We couldn’t be more thrilled to once again be one of the charities to benefit! On Friday April 26th, our patron Harry Baker, spent the morning with the students and teachers at Hampton Court House School in London. As our partner school, we were thrilled to arrange Harry’s visit to HCH whereby he could share his story of navigating and conquering the many challenges he has faced, including his CP diagnosis, in order for him to realise his dream of representing his country, doing what he loves best - playing football. Harry is a much-valued member of the CP England football team; he has played in 8 major tournaments, 49 games, scored 12 goals, won a golden boot and a silver medal! It was a wonderful morning, enjoyed by all with plenty of questions, photographs with smiles stretching from ear to ear and an abundance of autograph requests and signatures! Above all, Harry’s message of triumph over tribulation, if at first you don’t succeed, keep trying until you do, was the take-away highlight of the day. Our sincerest thanks to both Harry Baker and Hampton Court House for a fantastic morning together. This week is the Global Action Week for Education 2024 (GAWE 2024) and this year’s GAWE in particular is an important landmark as it launches the 25th anniversary of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE). In 1999 in Dakar, Senegal, movements and civil society organisations (CSOs) from different continents joined forces to have a unified voice in Education for All (EFA). While there has been progress towards education for all, barriers to education persist. UNESCO reported in 2023 that 250 million children remain out of school and 773 million adults around the world, mostly women, still lack basic literacy skills. The challenges of gender inequity, discrimination, quality of education, and decreasing education financing are further compounded by the multiple crises that countries are grappling with. Conflicts, economic crises, gender violence, racism, health and climate disasters signal the need for an education that will enable children, youth, and adults to deal with the current realities and shape the future. We believe that education is truly transformative and are proud to be doing our bit to transform the lives of more than 450 children and young people in Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda through education, simply by removing the financial barriers their families face in paying for their education. We are also working to reduce the barriers faced by children with disabilities in particular to enable them to access – and thrive in – schools and colleges. #RafikiThaboFoundation #education #charity #InternationalDevelopment #GoodCause #philanthropy #GivingBack #GlobalEducationWeek #GAWE2024 #EducationMatters #EducationIsPower #scholarships #HelpingChildren #CharityImpact #SecondarySchool #gratitude #uganda #kenya #lesotho #HelpingOthers #determination #university #CourageousWomen #BrightFuture #ReachingGoals #EducatingWomen #EmpoweringWomen #ThePowerOfEducation #ThePowerOfWomen
