Starting today and continuing into the first two weeks this May 1st – 15th, we are a Charity Of The Month with our partner Scrap Car Comparison! Last time we were their Charity Of The Month they raised nearly £5,000 for us with your support! That meant we could pay the entire 5-year secondary education for three children in Kenya who without our support would have remained out of school. How life-changing is that? 💚 How many lives will you help us transform this time? Please help us on our Donate-a-Car-Scheme journey – spread the word – scrap your car – and donate what you can! Since 2016 Scrap Car Comparison have raised hundreds of thousands for over 30 charities making a huge impact. We couldn’t be more thrilled to once again be one of the charities to benefit! Empowering young people and their communities in Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda through education.
About us
The Rafiki Thabo Foundation’s purpose is to improve the quality of life and increase the life opportunities for members of our link communities. All our projects are initiated and managed by experienced members of the communities in Africa. The majority of our work is about supporting individuals' education in our focus communities. Through our committees in-country, we provide grants to promising students to enable them to continue their education at secondary, polytechnic and university levels where otherwise they would be unable to afford the fees. This is not child sponsorship – all students supported by Rafiki Thabo have already qualified for their further education by their own merits. We simply provide financial assistance to enable them to access the education they are qualified to have. We also support other requests from our link communities, such as a schools feeding programme in Uganda and the development of a secondary school in Lesotho.

On Friday April 26th, our patron Harry Baker, spent the morning with the students and teachers at Hampton Court House School in London. As our partner school, we were thrilled to arrange Harry’s visit to HCH whereby he could share his story of navigating and conquering the many challenges he has faced, including his CP diagnosis, in order for him to realise his dream of representing his country, doing what he loves best - playing football. Harry is a much-valued member of the CP England football team; he has played in 8 major tournaments, 49 games, scored 12 goals, won a golden boot and a silver medal! It was a wonderful morning, enjoyed by all with plenty of questions, photographs with smiles stretching from ear to ear and an abundance of autograph requests and signatures! Above all, Harry’s message of triumph over tribulation, if at first you don’t succeed, keep trying until you do, was the take-away highlight of the day. Our sincerest thanks to both Harry Baker and Hampton Court House for a fantastic morning together. This week is the Global Action Week for Education 2024 (GAWE 2024) and this year’s GAWE in particular is an important landmark as it launches the 25th anniversary of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE). In 1999 in Dakar, Senegal, movements and civil society organisations (CSOs) from different continents joined forces to have a unified voice in Education for All (EFA). While there has been progress towards education for all, barriers to education persist. UNESCO reported in 2023 that 250 million children remain out of school and 773 million adults around the world, mostly women, still lack basic literacy skills. The challenges of gender inequity, discrimination, quality of education, and decreasing education financing are further compounded by the multiple crises that countries are grappling with. Conflicts, economic crises, gender violence, racism, health and climate disasters signal the need for an education that will enable children, youth, and adults to deal with the current realities and shape the future. We believe that education is truly transformative and are proud to be doing our bit to transform the lives of more than 450 children and young people in Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda through education, simply by removing the financial barriers their families face in paying for their education. We are also working to reduce the barriers faced by children with disabilities in particular to enable them to access – and thrive in – schools and colleges. #RafikiThaboFoundation #education #charity #InternationalDevelopment #GoodCause #philanthropy #GivingBack #GlobalEducationWeek #GAWE2024 #EducationMatters #EducationIsPower #scholarships #HelpingChildren #CharityImpact #SecondarySchool #gratitude #uganda #kenya #lesotho #HelpingOthers #determination #university #CourageousWomen #BrightFuture #ReachingGoals #EducatingWomen #EmpoweringWomen #ThePowerOfEducation #ThePowerOfWomen

We took the opportunity of having Bishop Liverson, Miriam and Erasto from our Kenya committee visiting us here in the UK to spend time discussing how we might best support our partner school in Kenya, ACK St. Bartholomew’s School, to become a leading school providing valuable education to boys from disadvantaged backgrounds in and around Voi. We were joined by Andrea and Jenny who were instrumental in the establishment, construction and initial development of the school back in 2005, through the Kazi Mingi Foundation who we merged with in 2015. We discussed what it would take to make the school really stand out from other schools in Voi such that parents would really want to send their children to learn there, and how Rafiki Thabo might support the school to reach these goals and fulfil this vision. Lots of ideas were shared and we can’t wait to see the transformation in the school over the months and years to come. 💚 #Education #EducationForAll #EducationForAllChildren #EducationMatters #EducationIsPower #SupportingChildren #Empowerment #BetterFuture #ChangeTheWorld #Charity #ReachingGoals #RafikiThaboFoundation #InternationalDevelopment #GoodCause #Kenya

We were so pleased to host an event for our supporters within reach of the Chipping Norton area to meet our esteemed visitors from Kenya on Saturday: Bishop Liverson, his wife Miriam, and Erasto who all sit on our Kenya committee and therefore play a crucial role in implementing our programmes on the ground. It was truly heart-warming to hear from Bishop Liverson about the transformational difference our support is making to young people in Kenya, including Emma* who was brought up by her grandmother after she lost both parents and did not have the means to continue onto university. Rafiki Thabo supported her throughout her degree and she is now teaching in a village near Voi. Bishop Liverson also told us about the efforts his Diocese are making to improve the home environment of some of our scholars, in recognition of the fact that this is also an important enabling factor for children to benefit as much as possible from education. We are so proud to be working in partnership with the Diocese of Taita Taveta to enable so many children and young people in and around the Voi area to reach their full potential through education. *not her real name #Kenya #Uganda #Lesotho #RafikiThaboFoundation #education #charity #InternationalDevelopment #GoodCause #philanthropy #GivingBack #EducationForLife #EducationMatters #EducationIsPower #determination #ReachingGoals #NeverGiveUpOnYourDreams #ThePowerOfEducation

We're so very grateful when our supporters challenge themselves in order to raise funds to help us enable access to education for more young disadvantaged children in Kenya, Uganda and Lesotho. Donations and regular giving are critical to our work and we couldn't do what we do without our passionate and generous supporters. This time it's our fabulous trustee Andrew Uglow who is braving his first marathon! We're sure you'll smash it Andy and it's amazing to see that you've nearly hit your fundraising target already as well!! Good luck in Milton Keynes!
In 3 weeks I’ll be plodding through the streets of Milton Keynes, aiming to complete my first marathon. It’s a bit nerve-wracking, and the training has been quite intense - but I’m raising money for a great charity, the Rafiki Thabo Foundation, who provide support to communities in Lesotho, Kenya and Uganda to enable young people to access education. If you’d like to contribute to my £1,000 target, please go to my ‘Just Giving’ page. Every little helps - and even a few pounds can have a profound impact on a child’s life. I’ll let you know how I get on… https://lnkd.in/eVa_Bvgq

We are proud to be supporting one of our wonderful partners in Kenya, Dadashi Special Children Centre, to reach full financial sustainability. When we embarked on this, we didn’t foresee COVID and the cost of living crisis, which have had a hugely detrimental impact on the ability of the families who use the centre to pay for services, as well as pushing prices up for Dadashi. We did hope, however, that our support would enable Dadashi to ‘crowd in’ other funders and this dream has come true – our support to Dadashi, along with the incredible services they provide to children with developmental disabilities, has caught a Kenyan philanthropist’s eye, and he has donated a building for Dadashi to use, meaning a dramatic reduction in their overheads as they will no longer need to pay rent. It will also mean they will have more space to expand their services, enabling more families to benefit from – and pay for – the therapy and counselling services offered. It will also enable them to expand the DADA vocational training project, through which mothers of the children using the centre can learn skills in tailoring, hairdressing and knitting, raising valuable income that they can use to support their families, including sending their children to school, and also pay for the services they receive from Dadashi. We can’t wait to watch this next stage of Dadashi’s development, and are proud to have been able to give them a helping hand towards it!
