Pathways to Physician Diversity: A National Summit

Phoenix, AZ US
February 9, 2018 to February 10, 2018

Course Directors: Michele Y. Halyard, M.D. (Mayo Clinic), Barbara L. Jordan, M.A. (Mayo Clinic)

Collaborative Planning Committee Members: Alden Landry, M.D. (Harvard Medical School), Norma Poll, Ph.D. (Association of American Medical Colleges), Alan Rawls, Ph.D. (Arizona State University), Kameron Matthews, M.D. (Tour for Diversity in Medicine); and Andrew Sanderson, M.D. (Department of Health and Human Services).

This summit is designed to encourage a national conversation on current challenges and future solutions by involving a national group of stakeholders in exploring the current state of the access pathway for underrepresented students in medical education. Participants will engage in deconstructing the MD/MD-PhD pathway to identify ways to increase diversity in medicine.

Plans for the Summit are as follows:

  1. Provide a forum for review and exploration of evidence that defines the diversity pathway for physicians and physician scientists.
  2. Identify and share best practices for engorging the medical education pathway while also exploring novel strategies that aim to prepare students to pursue these careers.
  3. Engage a multitude of stakeholders in a national conversation on the identified challenges and potential solutions necessary to enhance access to pathways that will increase diversity in medicine.
  4. Develop proceedings from the conference presentations and discussion inclusive of identified goals, targets and an ongoing mechanism for monitoring and reporting outcomes.
  5. Develop plans for a national consortium to collaborate with furthering diversity in the medical education pathway.

Participants are invited to submit Poster Presentations regarding how they or their organization have fostered Diversity in the medical education pathway. Poster submissions are due no later than January 26, 2018. For directions on submissions, please email us at mca.cme@Mayo.edu
