THE EXPEDITION MEDICINE NATIONAL CONFERENCE LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS

april 21 & 22, 2023

The ExpedMed CME Conference

As one of the world's premiere Expedition Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, and Travel Medicine education companies, we're committed to providing “best of service” CME educational opportunities for medical professionals. Our courses train participants to work in wilderness, extreme, and remote environments, or consult on patients who have returned from these locations.

Attending an ExpedMed event is a refreshing alternative to the typical CME course. Our ExpedMed CME curriculum is based on the textbook entitled Expedition and Wilderness Medicine edited by Drs. Gregory Bledsoe, Michael Manyak, and David Townes. Drawing from a wide range of wilderness medicine and expedition medicine topics — with a particular emphasis on wilderness, tropical medicine, and travel medicine — an ExpedMed CME course will provide you with the information you need on a variety of important topics, all in a concise and practical format.

Faculty

The ExpedMed faculty are each carefully selected based on their impeccable academic credentialsvast field experience, and teaching ability. They have been drawn from such prestigious medical institutions as the Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, the Walter Reed Research Institute, and Oxford University . Past faculty at our ExpedMed events include Dr. Luanne Freer, Dr. Michael VanRooyen, Dr. Tim Erickson, Dr. David Warrell, Dr. Howard Donner, Dr. Alan Magill, Dr. Rich Williams, Dr. Ken Kamler, Dr. Martin Nweeia, Dr. David Townes, Dr. Michael Callahan, Dr. Karen VanHoesen, Dr. Howard Backer, and many others.

Venue

Located in the beautiful Riverwalk District of downtown Little Rock, the Expedition Medicine National Conference will be held at the headquarters of Heifer International.

Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth.  At the Heifer Village, participants in our ExpedMed event will be able to tour the interactive exhibits that provide a stimulating and challenging educational experience for people of all ages.

CME Accreditation

This activity is being planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for 16 hours of Category I CME.

ExpedMed CME Adventures

ExpedMed CME adventures are designed to take you into the field to learn practical principles of Expedition Medicine and Wilderness Medicine.  Geographic locations are chosen to provide the best learning opportunities while also having a lot of fun.

Here are a few of the ExpedMed adventures we've organized in the past...

KLilimanjaro CME Adventure

A 14 day Kilimanjaro adventure. Our physicians earned CME credit while climbing with Eddie Frank to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Eddie's vast experience climbing Kilimanjaro has made Tusker Trail the most skilled and professional trekking company on the mountain. Since his first climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1977, he has climbed Africa's tallest mountain 44 times.

Great White SHark CME Adventure

In 2012, ExpedMed teamed up with Shark Diver to offer a tremendous CME adventure. Participants boarded a beautiful yacht in San Diego and traveled to Guadalupe Island for a 5 day trip viewing magnificent Great White Sharks in the clear waters off Guadalupe Island, the best Great White Shark diving anywhere in the world with 100+ foot visibility.

ExpedMed polar Bear ADventure

In 2011, ExpedMed took a group of medical professionals on an epic trip to Churchill, Canada.  The most rewarding way to experience the polar bears of Churchill is to immerse yourself in their environment; from the moment you wake up, throughout the day and into the endless winter nights. The best way to accomplish this is a stay at Tundra Buggy's world famous Tundra Buggy Lodge. Although it's mobile, each fall for the last 20+ years the Lodge has been transported out and assembled in the best location for 'round the clock' bear viewing.

What do clinicians think of ExpedMed CME courses?

Fantastic conference. My second experience with ExpedMed. I went two years ago and was so enthusiastic about it that I told many people about it and recruited as many people as I could. The speakers who came of course were ALL EXCELLENT
— Doreen Hung Mar, MD, Emergency Medicine
As a US Navy Survival Instructor and Medic, most of the information will have some factor in not only my teaching of survival techniques but in planning operations and conducting medical coverage of these operations.
— Joel Walker, MD, Military: Aerospace Physiology/Emergency Medicine
This was the first conference I’ve attended where I’ve gone to ALL the lectures and looked forward to the next day! The speakers were great – knowledgeable, passionate about what they do, entertaining. I also like the historical info on the infectious diseases and the personal adventure stories.
— Alexia Gordon MD
This conference was outstanding! The quality of instructors and information is second to none. I hope to make attendance to ExpedMed a yearly happening! Loved the case studies! I love the fact that all of the presenters have experience. They’re not just talking about theories. They’ve been there, done that.
— Julie Chase, BS, NREMT-P, Aluting Support Contractor
This conference is taught by very professional physicians who are, in one way or another, a different breed of doctor. It has application for military audience, while limited, that are quite informative. Dr. Ling’s brief on Neuro was amazing. It’s not every day you have a brain surgeon teach you how to manage neurological injuries in language you can understand!
— Keith Daris, San Diego, CA
All the speakers possessed strong academic backgrounds, real life “street credentials,” and brought excitement to their presentations. Living abroad, hostile geopolitical environments, shark experts, Secret Service docs, international venoms and toxins…the Expedition Medicine conference was more than just CME credits…you leave the conference armed with applicable medical fundamentals. Through the conference, I gained a whole new respect for the United States military and their medical research. Although I have attended numerous excellent conferences in related fields, the Expedition Medicine conference was the summit!!!
— James Adkins, MD, Anesthesiology & Travel Medicine
