Join us for the opening of our fall season in the First Baptist Church Medford! This program consists of two contrasting halves, with the first half celebrating Mexican Independence day with contrasting and exciting works by five different living Mexican composers: Jose Elizondo, Charles Phillip Daniels Torres, Arturo Marquez, Nubia Melina Jaime Donjuan, and Abraham Gomez. We conclude with a quick preview of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, arranged by the Calefax Quintet. Admission free, livestream link available here!

Kalliope Reed Quintet collaborates with the abundantly talented Berkee professor Francine Trester – as both a composer and a soloist! In the first half of the concert we will present Francine Trester’s works for Reed Quintet, including This, an original work and poem composed in 2020 about the early months of the pandemic – and also featured on our upcoming album! We will also present a short two song preview of her recently commissioned new song cycle Azure World for Mezzo Soprano and Reed Quintet, using poetry by Alfred Tennyson with Mezzo Soprano Carrie Cheron. The second half will feature Francine Trester as a soloist for a unique arrangement of Cesar Franck’s Violin Sonata, arranged by Raaf Hekkema from the Calefax Reed Quintet. Kalliope in Blue – with special guest Carrie Cheron, Mezzo-Soprano
This blue-inspired program celebrates both Gershwin’s 125th birthday and Hispanic Heritage Month, while also creating the perfect complement to the Somerville Museum’s seasonal exhibit BLUE: the exploration of a color by Martha Friend. Kalliope Reed Quintet joins forces with Mezzo Soprano Carrie Cheron and composer Francine Trester for a fantastic program of contrasting 20th and 21st century works inspired by the color blue. We will present the world premiere of Francine Trester’s reed quintet version of her new song cycle Azure World, featuring five songs with Poetry by Alfred Tennyson, followed by a new arrangement of “Blue” by Joni Mitchell. As part of our on-going celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month we will present Lando Azulado by Peruvian composer Daniel Cueto, and Astro Errante by Mexican composer Abraham Gomez. And in celebration of it being the week of George Gershwin’s 125th birthday, Kalliope will complete the concert with two brand new arrangements: selections from his lesser-known opera Blue Monday, and one of his favorite masterpieces Rhapsody in Blue. Join us in Yarmouth’s beautiful Thacher Hall for a blue-inspired program celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and Gershwin’s 125th birthday! This concert features works from living composers from across Latin America, beginning with Mexican composers Abraham Gomez and Nubia Jaime Donjuan. Next we will feature two Kalliope commissions, Miguel del Aguila’s Transoceanica, musically depicting an adventurous bus ride from Rio to Lima, Peru, followed by Peruvian/American composer Daniel Cueto’s Amaru, inspired by the Peruvian Deity and featured on our upcoming album! And in celebration of it being the week of George Gershwin’s 125th birthday, Kalliope will complete the concert with two brand new Gershwin arrangements: selections from his lesser-known opera Blue Monday, and one of his favorite masterpieces Rhapsody in Blue. Tickets $30 for adults and free for youth under 18, and are available for purchase here. We conclude our 2023 Fall season with another contrasting concert in collaboration with violinist Francine Trester, featuring our Latin American favorites followed by the French Romantic Cesar Franck’s Violin Sonata. This concert features works from living composers from across Latin America, beginning with Mexican composers Abraham Gomez and Nubia Jaime Donjuan. Next we will feature two Kalliope commissions, Miguel del Aguila’s Transoceanica, musically depicting an adventurous bus ride from Rio to Lima, Peru, followed by Peruvian/American composer Daniel Cueto’s Amaru, inspired by the Peruvian Deity and featured on our upcoming album! In the second half we will switch to something completely different with the beloved Violin Sonata by French Romantic composer Cesar Franck, with violinist Francine Trester, and arranged for Reed Quintet and violin by the Calefax Quintet. Portraits of Greece
Kalliope is named after the Greek muse of epic poetry and mother of Orpheus, and we’re very excited to be present a Greece-inspired program! This concert will feature world premieres by Berklee Composition Department faculty members Panagiotis Liaropoulos and Margaret McAllister, Jean Phillip Rameau’s “Entrance of the Muses” and Ravel’s Cinq mélodies populaires grecques – both arranged by members of the Calefax Quintet. After two years of expanding the Mexican Reed Quintet repertoire we are very excited to be able to present a full program of reed quintets by living Mexican composers! Original reed quintets featured on this program include Across the Seas Towards the Mystical by Charles Daniels Torres – commissioned by Kalliope in 2021, and Astro Errante by Mexican composer Abraham Gomez – winner of the annual Calefax Reed Quintet composition competition. This concert will also include several more traditional works arranged by the Kalliope Reed Quintet: Danzón Alcatraz by Nubia Melina Jaime Donjuan, Danzas Latinoamericanas by Jose Elizondo, and Arturo Márquez’s Danzón no. 5 – Portales de Madrugada, and Danzón no. 6 – Puerto Calvario, featuring our saxophonist Bennett Parsons as a soloist! Join us for this free concert as we open our summer season with a concert of mostly new repertoire along with some recently added favorites! This program features the USA premiere of Astro Errante by Mexican composer Abraham Gomez, and winner of the annual Calefax Reed Quintet composition competition. We will present east coast premieres of composer and Kalliope bass clarinetist Jon Russell’s Deep Waters, Distant Stars, and selections from Jeff Scott’s Homage to Paradise Valley. Also included is a new and extended version of Daniel Cueto’s Momentos Peruanos, and our recently premiered Laurentian Bolero by Mathieu Lussier. Admission is free, donations accepted. Closing the spring season the day before World Environment Day, Kalliope will perform a benefit concert for the Mystic River Watershed Association. Performed in the recently opened Charlotte and William Bloomberg Medford Public Library run on 100% renewable energy (the first library of it’s kind in the state), Kalliope will perform a program of climate related works. The concert will include our first collaboration with Brookline-based Korean pianist Cholong Park, and will include arrangements of works by well known and more obscure composers of the 20th century. The program will begin with a reed trio by a less-known French composer Louise Marie Simon, who composed under the pseudonym Claude Arrieu. Following that we will perform our own adaptation of the Poulenc Sextet – originally for piano and traditional woodwind quintet but adapted for piano and reed quintet. After a brief intermission we will perform our newest commission Bonne Année by Oliver Caplan. Finally we will conclude the program with our own arrangement of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, featuring Cholong Park as a soloist and the Kalliope Reed Quintet playing a reduced version of the orchestra. The Kalliope Reed Trio’s first concert of 2022 – and our first ever commissioned work! This year the festival theme is the environment, and we will present a 60 minute set of new environment-related works. The set will include the world premiere of La Tierra no se vende by RI-based composer Eliane Aberdam and other climate related works. Join us in Mazatlan, Mexico for our second concert and entirely different program at Festival Temporada Primavera! The first half of this program migrates musically from north to south with three beautiful works by living composers, beginning in Canada with Mathieu Lussier’s Laurentian Bolero, moving to the USA with Jenni Brandon’s Wildflower Quintet, and ending in Mexico with Arturo Marquez’s Danzon no. 5. The second half migrates musically from south to north beginning with Miguel del Aguila’s Transoceanica, depicting a long and adventurous bus ride from Rio Brazil to Lima Peru. After arriving in Peru we perform Daniel Cueto’s Amaru – about the great Peruvian Diety, and then conclude the concert in Mexico with the World Premiere of Across the Seas Towards the Mystical by Mexican composer Charles Philip Daniels Torres! Again an exciting evening of music not to be missed, and in the beatiful Teatro Angela Peralta. Our program tours South America south to north starting in Argentina with Astor Piazzolla’s Tango Suite, Transoceanica by Miguel del Aguila (Uruguay) – musically depicting a bus adventure from Rio Brazil to Lima Peru. After arriving in Peru we will perform two works we commissioned by Pervian composer Daniel Cueto: Momentos Peruanos and Amaru, and complete the program with some new arrangements from Colombia. In alignment with Women’s History month and the Cultural Center’s month-long exhibit Empowerment vs. Exploitation, the program will feature all female and non-binary composers. Works on the program will include This by Boston-based composer Francine Trester, reflecting on her personal experience of the pandemic March through May 2020; Thaw by Becky Turro, portraying a trip they took to Acadia National Park in March 2017; and Wildflower Quintet by Jenni Brandon, reflecting the work of Ladybird Johnson. This festival was originally set to take place in Texas before going virtual, and going with this theme we will present the world premiere of Jenni Brandon’s Wildflower Quintet, inspired the Ladybird Wildflower Research Center in Austin Texas. The correlating poems will be included in the video as the music progresses. Following this will be Daniel Cueto’s Amaru – back for it’s first performance of our 2021 season! Reflections and Diversions – Taking place in the NewCity Church in Newton, MA, this concert features an exciting program opening with two in-person premieres of Zach Gulaboff Davis‘s Divergences, and Quincy-based composer Ian Wiese’s Suite for Reed Quintet. After intermission we will feature a second world premiere with Newton-based composer Francine Trester’s This, inspired by the early days of the pandemic, with an accompanying poem written and performed by the composer.
