Alasdair Roberts

Glasgow-based musician Alasdair Roberts is celebrated both for his original compositions, but also for his sensitive exploratory treatment of traditional material. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy an intimate solo performance from an incredible artist. Roberts is also known for his frequent collaborations with other musicians, as well as being a member of folk supergroup The Furrow Collective, for which he gained a Radio 2 Folk Award.

He is extraordinarily prolific, releasing over 15 albums over twenty years. He has worked with US alternative label Drag City Records since 1997, lending his work a more experimental sound not usually associated with traditional music. He investigates how music situated in the past and steeped in history can be removed from sentiment and made to live and breathe in our hyper-accelerated present, he says: “I always talk about myself being an experimentalist rather than a nostalgist in terms of drawing on the past. I like the process of renewal rather than comfort.”

Performances inspired by Scottish ballads include winding melodies, intricate ideas, powerful themes all delivered in his distinctive clear and calm voice as though he were telling a story:

“...Roberts effortlessly makes explicit the shared vocabulary of folk’s natural weirdness and experimental music’s studied strangeness.... he discovers the inner mystery of traditional music and shows that if this infinitely expressive material is respected, it may yet reward us with results that sound utterly unprecedented.” Stewart Lee, The Times.
